June 2007 - Canada's Senate Committee on National Finance issued a report called "The Vertical and Municipal Fiscal Balances" recommending that the federal government consider giving municipalities access to growth taxes, including the GST.

June 2, 2007 - At their annual conference in Calgary, Federation of Canadian Municipalities' delegates adopted a resolution calling on the federal government to share the equivalent of one cent of the GST with municipal governments so they can invest in the future prosperity of their communities.

May 3, 2007 - The Big City Mayors' Caucus of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities met today in Toronto where they unanimously endorsed the report, "Sharing the Wealth for a Strong and Prosperous Canada: A Proposal to the Government of Canada for Sharing Revenues with Canada's Big Cities."
